Shining a light on cheaper power

7 April 2025

AnglicareSA’s innovative solar panel project will be rolled out to an extra 21 households thanks to a partnership between AnglicareSA and St Peter’s Cathedral that raised $47,500.

The fundraiser, through which AnglicareSA matched dollar-for-dollar donations made through St Peter’s Cathedral, will help low-income households to benefit from cheaper power and reduce carbon emissions either directly through the installation of solar panels, or through an innovative Community Solar Program.

Chief Executive Officer, Grant Reubenicht, said AnglicareSA and Believe Housing Australia were delighted with the success of the fundraising initiative, which would amplify the rollout of solar across the community housing portfolio.

“The support we have received from St Peter’s Cathedral is instrumental in advancing our shared mission of sustainability and environmental stewardship whilst providing cost of energy relief to more than 20 families in the community,” he said.

“This collaborative effort highlights the powerful impact we can achieve when we come together for a common cause.”

“On average, tenants save between $250 and $280 on their annual electricity bills through this initiative.”

In 2020, AnglicareSA and Believe Housing Australia partnered with 369 Labs on an environmentally focused and innovative solar panel project. Through this collaboration, AnglicareSA funds the cost of rooftop solar panel systems, providing tenants with access to significantly reduced energy tariff rates when the system is generating energy.

Excess solar energy generated from rooftop solar installations is either sold back to the grid or channelled through to other tenants whose properties are unsuitable for solar panels. As a result, these Community Solar Program tenants can access reduced energy rates without the installation of a solar system on their own roof.

Through the $47,500 raised, four households will have solar panels installed, while a further 17 Community Solar participants will be funded.

“On average, tenants save between $250 and $280 on their annual electricity bills through this initiative,” Grant said.

“We are excited to see grow further thanks to the generous support of St Peter’s Cathedral.”

Bishop Chris McLeod said the Cathedral community was enormously proud of the success of the fundraiser which would make a real difference to people who needed support.

“Taking care of others includes a responsibility to take care of creation, and the solar panel project succeeds in reducing our impact on the environment,” Bishop Chris said.

“Climate change and creation care sometimes seem too large and vague for us to handle and projects like this are practical ways of caring for our neighbours, both near and far.

“They remind us that what we do matters, and that we all have a role to play.
