AnglicareSA occupational therapist (OT) Jack Murdock loves supporting people to gain greater independence, reach their full potential, and improve their quality of life.
“Helping people live their best lives in their own homes, in the community, or wherever they would like to be is the core of what we do as occupational therapists,” Jack said.
AnglicareSA is proud to acknowledge and celebrate our team of occupational therapists this OT Week, recognising the important role they play in helping our customers live their lives the way they want to.
For Jack, OT Week is a chance to recognise the vital support occupational therapists provide every day.
“I think occupational therapists are a key part of the allied health team,” Jack said.
“Their roles are so varied, and they provide various supports tailored to every aspect of a person’s life and needs.”
For two of Jack’s customers, married couple Ian and Marjorie, occupational therapy has made a huge difference to their quality of life.
Jack supported the couple to maintain their independence by organising a range of modifications and equipment to be installed in their home, including ramps in some doorways, an electric bed, rails in the bathroom, and an electric scooter for each of them.
Ian said the assistive equipment had improved his and Marjorie’s functioning and independence.
“It’s made a big difference to our mobility around the house and helping us do what we want,” Ian said.
“I can now get up easily to make a coffee or go for a walk.”
It’s not only daily living tasks that are now more manageable for Ian – with a ramp installed, he can now access his model train room and continue to enjoy his hobbies.
Marjorie added that Jack’s knowledge and experience with fitting and selecting the most appropriate modifications had helped them navigate the supports available.
“We wouldn’t have known these things were available if Jack hadn’t suggested them,” Marjorie said.
“He’s been a great help, and the improvements have kept us in our own home.”
