You’re not alone. We provide ongoing support if you have lost someone to suicide.

When someone you love takes their own life, there’s no easy way forward. It can cause a ripple effect across family, friends, workplaces and community groups.

We understand that, on top of the comfort provided by loved ones and your community, families also often need practical and professional support.

Our StandBy service is free and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week for all South Australians who have been bereaved or impacted by suicide at any stage in their life.

The service can help connect you with supports at a place and time when you need it the most.  Supports can include emotional support, written resources, guidance on how to speak to children or loved ones about their loss, and referrals to relevant support services.

Because people grieve in very different ways, support services may not be required for many weeks, months or even years in some cases.  Whenever help is needed StandBy will be there to provide support and assistance.

We support people of all ages across greater Adelaide and country South Australia.

We can also provide professional development sessions, brief information sessions and run community workshops – all without cost.

How we can help

StandBy Support After Suicide is a free service currently operating across Australia – AnglicareSA provides the service across South Australia.

The service is focused on supporting anyone who has been bereaved or impacted by suicide at any stage in their life, including:

  • individuals and witnesses
  • families and friends
  • schools, workplaces, community groups
  • first responders
  • service providers.

Initially, our support worker will meet with you in-person to talk about your unique circumstances and provide resources, connections and referrals to other community supports. Once we’ve met with you, we’ll then organise catch-ups via the phone after 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months to make sure you’re doing okay. Of course, we’re available 24/7 if you need support between these times.

This service is continued for up to two years to ensure you are not alone and receive ongoing support.

StandBy builds community preparedness and resilience through extensive training to community and professional groups to ensure effectiveness and that duplicated effort is avoided.

The program is also ideally placed to offer a settings-based approach, providing group support after a suicide for schools, workplaces and community groups.
