Please donate today and help support families grieving the loss of their loved ones
Each year AnglicareSA holds FREE Star Bear weekend camps for children 5-17 years who have lost a parent, sibling or significant person. The camps help children understand grieving is a normal part of life and to help them learn how to cope with their grief.
At camp, each child is assigned a mentor who provides individualised support. They participate in activities like a Q&A with a doctor, a remembrance ceremony, making memory boxes and other fun activities. They can also share their stories with other children going through similar situations, which help to normalise their feelings and to understand they’re not alone.
We also run free Star Bear Parent sessions during the camp so parents and carers can meet, chat about their experiences and challenges, learn how to manage their grief and support their children.
At the end of the camp, families are invited to release memory balloons with heartfelt messages for their loved ones. This is an emotional and memorable time as it symbolises release and new life. We also offer a free 6-week post camp support service to these families.
We receive no government funding for Star Bear camps and so to allow this essential service to continue we need to raise $60,000. No other program like this exists in South Australia and our camps are widely sought after.

Ramona’s Story: “Life moves on but memories are forever”
My journey seemed to be like so many other people’s stories, happily married to a loving husband with 2 young adorable daughters, a beautiful family home and stability. Life was good until……..
In the blink of an eye one day my husband Shaun who was always fit and healthy suddenly became seriously ill. I will never forget that phone call from him to say that the test results had come back – Shaun had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and our lives changed forever in that single moment.
Our eldest daughter had just started school, and our baby was only 7 months old. Shaun and I made a pact to always look after the girls, to help them through this journey, and support them the best that we could. Nothing seemed normal anymore but I knew that I had to put on a brave face for both the girls and Shaun.
After a courageous fight we lost Shaun/Daddy 18 months later. Losing my husband was one thing, but having to come home and tell our girls that Daddy had died was by far the worst experience of my life, and still remains with me today. I didn’t know how to protect them, or what support services were out there until five years later when I found out about AnglicareSA’s Star Bear camp.
Star Bear camp was exactly what the girls needed to help them manage their grief. For the first time, they had the confidence to connect with other children who really understood what it meant to lose a loved one.
The camp also gave me the opportunity to meet and talk to other parents about my grief issues that I would often try to hide from the girls. I felt as though a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders and I no longer had to act like a Super Mum all the time. The care, compassion, and understanding that we received from the Star Bear team exceeded my expectations.
To us, AnglicareSA Star Bear camp was a healing weekend away that helped mend our broken hearts. I hope that Daddy loved our messages of love attached to the colorful memory balloons that we released into the sky on the last day.
Love never dies.
