Recognition and meaningful moments at AnglicareSA

16 May 2025

So many lives, right here in SA: At AnglicareSA, our impact starts with you.

Whatever your role at AnglicareSA, you’ll help find a way forward for the communities you live in and care about. That’s something to be proud of. Two of our remarkable people, Christie and Jenna, shared their stories of how AnglicareSA’s holistic approach has connected vulnerable people with vital services to help them rebuild hope, one step at a time.

Connections that change lives

Christie Marrot-Castellat understands the power of family support. At just 18, she became one of her grandmother’s primary carers, determined to help her stay at home for as long as possible. Today, as an Intensive Tenancy Support Officer with Believe Housing Australia, the housing arm of AnglicareSA, Christie channels the same passion into helping others create their own supportive home environments.

“Being under the AnglicareSA umbrella allows for better outcomes for our tenants,” Christie said. “We can connect them to internal support programs, including NDIS, emergency funding, mental health and aged care services. They even get access to the AnglicareSA warehouse, containing free furniture and goods for their homes.

“There’s one tenant whose story has really stayed with me. He had no support systems and was struggling with his mental health, remaining isolated in his home. I don’t think he recognised the severity of what was happening, but when we first arrived, we identified his case as a crisis situation. We helped him address his medical issues, helped get his property back to a habitable state, and connected him with AnglicareSA’s aged care services for in-home support.

“When we first intervened, he wasn’t hopeful. But as we connected him with those services, his outlook transformed. We discovered he had a passion for filmmaking, so we connected him with the local library, and they’re helping him with recordings
and interviews. He also loves his faith, so we connected him to a local church and organised for him to be picked up every Sunday morning and taken to a service.

“He never thought he could lead the life he does. But now that his situation has improved, he’s absolutely thriving. That wouldn’t have been possible without our intervention. It’s amazing to see him living this amazing life after all the work we put in; it fills me with so much pride.”

Turning grief into growth

Although Jenna Falzon lost her father when she was only seven, his influence left a profound mark on her life. After his passing, she took on a nurturing role for her three younger siblings, which sparked her passion for caring for others. Since joining AnglicareSA as an Occupational Therapy graduate in 2008, Jenna has flourished in roles that perfectly align with her passions and purpose.

“After working in aged care for many years, I was feeling quite confident and comfortable in my role and was ready for a new challenge,” Jenna said. “I learned about an amazing program AnglicareSA offers called Star Bear, which is a grief and loss camp for young people who have lost someone significant. It’s mostly run by volunteers, which is really special, and I thought it would be a really beautiful way for me to use my own experiences of grief to help other people.

“At the time my dad passed away, mental health support wasn’t as available as it is now. A program like Star Bears would have really helped me understand and process my grief journey. I’ve found it really rewarding to support others through their grief, and it’s inspired me to volunteer with another AnglicareSA mentoring program for children in the foster care system.”

“Building trust is essential in our work with children and families. Whether through Star Bear or in our childcare centres, we really care about creating safe, inclusive environments where they can open up and truly thrive. For children facing extra challenges at home, we can draw on other AnglicareSA services to support them and set them up for success in their next education setting.”

“The social impact that comes from our involvement with these families is huge. We’re in a privileged position to have a profound impact on people’s lives. By connecting families with our full range of services, we create safety nets that prevent vulnerable people from falling through the cracks in our community.”
