A decade of support
30 September 2026
For a decade, Lisa has been supporting South Australians experiencing hardship as an AnglicareSA volunteer.
Countless times, she has been there for people going through challenges, offering them food, a friendly face, and sometimes simply a space to be heard.
Lisa started volunteering when AnglicareSA had an op shop at the former Magdalene Centre when it was located on Carrington Street.
Over the years, Lisa’s volunteer journey evolved with the service.
When the Magdalene Centre moved to Gilbert Street, Lisa moved with it, and when the op shop was replaced with our Thread Together program, she transitioned to providing emergency assistance and food.
Now, Lisa volunteers at our warehouse, accepting and sorting donations from Anglican parishes and community supporters.
“Over 10 years, I have certainly seen a lot of change, but there are always opportunities to volunteer for those who want to,” she said.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a defining time for Lisa as a volunteer, she said, because it highlighted the need for AnglicareSA’s Emergency Assistance services.
“It was a difficult and busy time, because so many people would come in for help because they were all losing their part-time or casual jobs in restaurants that weren’t open anymore,” she said.
“A lot of those people were cold as well, so we were able to give them not only food, but blankets and socks as well.”
Recently, Lisa received a special pin from AnglicareSA commemorating her 10 years of service.
“I could not believe I had reached 10 years of service as a volunteer. It has come around so quickly,” Lisa said.
“It doesn’t feel like work for me, because I love it, and my heart is in it. I look forward to the days I volunteer and seeing the other volunteers.
“Volunteering is very rewarding, and I always want to help people.
“It impacts my life too.”
Lisa encouraged anyone thinking of volunteering to “just do it”.
“You will never look back,” she said.
“You will have great fun, make great friendships, and be doing something that helps the world be a better place.”
