Emergency Assistance
It doesn’t take much to go from surviving to living in poverty. When people look away from those in need, we look closer. We shake hands, makes friends and connect people to resources during the most difficult time in their lives.
Our four emergency assistance sites across Adelaide provide much-needed relief to South Australians doing it tough. We support individuals and families that approach us with food, clothing, financial and emotional support, advocacy and referrals to other support services.
Star Bear
Our Star Bear camps support bereaved children and young people who have lost a parent, sibling or other significant person. The free weekend camps are run by trained volunteer mentors and qualified, experienced leaders.
We help young people cope with their grief by allowing them to realise that they’re not alone. As one camper explains, “I knew I wasn’t the only one that lost a parent, but I hadn’t met anyone else who had, not before camp.”
Thread Together
Our Thread Together program sources brand new, end-of-line clothes from Australian fashion brands that otherwise would be thrown out. Our purpose-fitted mobile wardrobes deliver these clothes to communities who need it most. People can also be referred to our centrally-located North Adelaide clothing hub.
This amazing program has a positive impact on many lives, including those experiencing/at risk of homelessness; Aboriginal people; new arrivals; survivors of domestic violence, and the long-term unemployed.
Turning Point
Our Turning Point program provides families facing homelessness with a fully furnished home. Families can stay in a Turning Point property for up to three months, while support workers refer them to services to help them find employment or training, access financial support and keep children engaged with school.
The majority of families who’ve come through Turning Point have since secured permanent housing, and in some cases gone on to purchase their own home.
