Put the heating on or pay the rent – you only have one choice. So which do you choose for your family?
It’s hard to imagine making this choice, but it’s a sad reality for so many families that knock on our door.
By supporting our Winter Appeal we can offer an immediate response with basic essentials, whilst supporting individuals and families to secure longer term solutions to avoid being in this position again.

Jody had been through a number of challenging years when she presented at our Elizabeth Mission looking for assistance.
Fleeing her home from another state due to an abusive relationship, she came to Adelaide, it was as far away as she could get with the money she had saved.
Jody had two children Kye aged 9 and Joel 11, they had left behind friends, school and sporting commitments and many of their personal possessions.
She turned to the staff at the Elizabeth Mission as her last resort, she’d used her savings, had nowhere to stay and simply had no other options, with Winter fast approaching things were getting desperate.
When staff at the Mission showed Jody kindness and a genuine willingness to help, Jody’s strength and resilience crumbled, Jody broke down.
“When I came in here at the worst point in my life for me and my children, I felt like a shadow of a person, a shadow of a human being. Then you come to a place like this (the Elizabeth Mission) and you talk to real people, with real hearts and they’ve helped me come alive again.” – Jody
During staff interactions with Jody they learned that she had aspirations to open her own catering business, she loved to cook. Providing good nutritious meals for her kids was really important to her and she wanted to be able to provide the same to her community.
Prior to relocating, Jody had been saving to buy cooking equipment so that someday she had the means to start her business.
AnglicareSA’s Emergency Assistance program provided Jody with temporary housing while they supported her to find a job, they were provided with hot meals, fresh food and warm clothing through Winter.
The kids were enrolled in a new school, given access to school uniforms and new shoes, AnglicareSA assisted them to settle into their new community.
Jody still aspires to start her own business, but for now she works in a local café and dabbles in catering on the side. She has started buying equipment again so that one day she can realise her dream.
