Imagine going without heating, warm clothes, or the groceries you need to prepare hot meals. Whether people are sleeping rough or living without electricity, they can go from surviving to struggling very quickly in winter.
While others might turn away from those in need, AnglicareSA leans in. During the most difficult time in a person’s life, we provide food, clothing, medications and financial counselling to help them get back on track. Last year alone, our Emergency Assistance team supported more than 12,000 South Australians.
If you’re in a position to help, please donate and support South Australians in crisis.
How your donation helps South Australians like Tony
Self-employed and devoted father of four Tony* was given heartbreaking news last year. His eldest daughter, 19-year-old Eliza* was critically injured and placed on life support after a shocking accident.
When Tony received the news, he rushed to the hospital. He broke down when he saw Eliza unconscious and dependent on life support.
Day after day, Tony visited Eliza, but there was little change in her condition. Days turned into weeks.
Tony’s family life, business and finances began to suffer. He didn’t return calls, couldn’t sleep, and didn’t have anyone to talk to. He tried to be strong for his wife and other children, but he often found himself breaking down and unable to concentrate. Simple tasks like managing his business, paying bills and having conversations were beyond him. Tony maxed out his credit cards and plunged into debt.
For the first time in his life, Tony applied for unemployment benefits. While waiting for his first benefit payment, Centrelink referred him to AnglicareSA’s Emergency Assistance program. The help came just in time.
Tony was given vouchers for groceries and other essentials, and with the immediate support, he began to lift his family out of crisis. He was able to get his business back on track and be there for his daughter Eliza, as she slowly recovered.
Tony’s story is a stark reminder that financial struggles can happen to anyone, and why we’re so grateful for your support. Without your generosity, it could have been a very different outcome.
