AnglicareSA is calling for donations, including non-perishable food items and new toys, to fill 1500 Christmas hampers for a growing number of families in need this festive season.

As one of the state’s largest emergency relief providers, AnglicareSA is seeing more people in financial crisis reach out for help this year, with already tight budgets expected to be stretched even further in the lead up to Christmas.

“There is no doubt that this Christmas will be tough for families, with more people needing to choose whether to put food on the table or pay the bills and a lot fewer people able to help out with donations,” said AnglicareSA Community Services Executive General Manager Nancy Penna.

In 2021/22, AnglicareSA provided emergency assistance to more than 13,000 South Australians, with almost half being families with children. That’s 1000 more people compared to pre-COVID.

Ms Penna said AnglicareSA was expecting to exceed last year’s distribution of more than 1500 Christmas hampers and 500 toys in December.

The Christmas hampers – with about four-days of food for a single person – are received by AnglicareSA customers, including women fleeing domestic violence, children and young people in care, and those who are facing homelessness.

Ms Penna said South Australians can assist those in need by donating to AnglicareSA’s Christmas Appeal, which supports emergency assistance services including food relief.

She said people can also help by donating non-perishable food items (listed below) needed to fill more than 1500 Christmas hampers over the next two weeks.
